Melissa Hume is a ceramic artist based in Vancouver, British Columbia. She began her training in the ceramics program at Langara College, continued her studies at the Alberta College of Art and Design and completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Emily Carr University, graduating in 2006, where she met fellow potter Niki and formed a friendship built around a shared commitment to the craft. That connection led the two to build a studio practice together, one that has continued for over two decades and now takes shape in a shared studio space in Strathcona, where Melissa works on her own individual body of work.

Melissa's practice began with a focus on functional pottery: beautiful, thoughtfully made objects meant for daily use. Over time, her work has expanded to include sculptural pieces alongside her functional ware, giving her the range to explore form more freely while still honoring the tactile, everyday purpose that first drew her to clay.

Her work is shaped by nature, historical ceramic forms, and a pull toward home, the objects, textures, and quiet rituals that make a space feel lived in. Using raw, mid-fire clay, Melissa hand builds and wheel throws each piece, then trims and refines it before a bisque fire. Glazes are mixed and applied by hand, dipped, poured, or brushed, before a final firing to cone 6 in an electric kiln.

In 2015, Melissa contributed to Enchanted Nights at Bloedel Conservatory, part of the VanDusen Festival of Lights, helping bring a miniature fairy village to life for the holiday event. Her work continues to grow from a foundation of hands-on craft, material curiosity, and a deep respect for the traditions of ceramic art.
